Cheapest Car Insurance in Michigan (2026): Companies, Detroit Rates & PIP Savings
Last updated: October 2026
Quick Answer
GEICO had the cheapest full coverage in Michigan in NerdWallet's September 2026 analysis at a median $110 a month, and Wolverine Mutual the cheapest minimum coverage at $27 a month. MoneyGeek's August 2026 data also found GEICO cheapest for full coverage ($70) and Travelers cheapest for minimum coverage ($25). Choosing the lowest PIP medical level you qualify for cuts premiums further.
The cheapest car insurance in Michigan for most drivers in 2026 comes from GEICO for full coverage and from small Michigan mutuals such as Wolverine Mutual for minimum coverage, according to NerdWallet's September 2026 rate analysis. But in Michigan, the company you pick is only half of the price. The other half is the set of no-fault choices only Michigan drivers make — your PIP medical level, whether you drop from 250/500 to 50/100 liability, and which of Michigan's three collision types you buy.
Below are the cheapest insurers by driver type and city, followed by the Michigan-specific ways to lower a quote. For costs, requirements and a full company overview, see our main Michigan car insurance guide.

| Farmers | $182 |

Source: NerdWallet, rates refreshed September 2026. NerdWallet's full-coverage profile is a 35-year-old with 100/300/50 liability and $1,000 deductibles.
A second study points the same direction. MoneyGeek's August 2026 analysis of a 40-year-old with a clean record found GEICO cheapest for full coverage at $70 per month, and Travelers cheapest for minimum coverage at $25 per month. Its Michigan averages were $138 per month for full coverage and $64 for minimum.
Notice how many of the cheap names are Michigan-focused carriers — Wolverine Mutual, Fremont, Meemic — rather than national brands. Wolverine Mutual, for example, sells through local agents, so asking an independent agency to quote Michigan mutuals alongside GEICO and Progressive is the quickest way to see the full range.
Cheap Car Insurance in Detroit, Michigan
Detroit remains Michigan's most expensive city even after the ZIP-code ban, because insurers may still price by territory. MoneyGeek puts Detroit full coverage at $289 per month, more than double Ann Arbor ($122) and Grand Rapids ($123). The cheapest Detroit options in NerdWallet's September 2026 data:
| Detroit driver profile | Cheapest full coverage (annual) | Cheapest minimum coverage (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Clean record | GEICO – $2,451 | Chubb – $689 |
| After a speeding ticket | Chubb – $3,237 | Chubb – $774 |
| After an accident | Chubb – $4,065 | Chubb – $979 |
| After a DUI | Progressive – $3,687 | Progressive – $1,615 |
| Poor credit | GEICO – $4,053 | Chubb – $1,034 |
For a Detroit driver, the gap between minimum and full coverage is large enough that the PIP and liability choices below usually save more than switching companies. That said, Detroit has high vehicle theft, so dropping comprehensive on a car you could not afford to replace is a false economy.
The Biggest Michigan Savings Lever: Your PIP Medical Level
Since July 2020, every Michigan driver picks a PIP medical limit, and state law (MCL 500.2111f) forced insurers to cut PIP rates from their May 2019 levels by an average of at least:
| PIP medical level | Required minimum average PIP reduction | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited | 10% | Anyone |
| $500,000 | 20% | Anyone |
| $250,000 | 35% | Anyone (exclusions option needs qualifying health coverage) |
| $50,000 | 45% | Named insured on Medicaid |
| Opt-out | No PIP medical premium charged | Named insured on Medicare Parts A and B |
The mandated reductions apply to policies effective before July 2, 2028. They are reductions to the PIP portion of the premium, not the whole bill.
There is a second, smaller saving: the MCCA per-vehicle fee for policies effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027 is $84 with unlimited PIP but $19 with any other level — $65 per car per year. Before choosing a lower level, check that your health plan actually covers auto-accident injuries, because anything above your PIP limit that health insurance won't pay becomes your bill.

Other Ways to Get Affordable Car Insurance in Michigan
- Choose 50/100 liability deliberately — or not.Michigan's default is $250,000/$500,000 bodily injury liability; you can select $50,000/$100,000 instead. It lowers the premium, but because injured people can now sue for medical costs above their own PIP limit, low liability limits carry more personal risk than they did before 2020.
- Pick the right collision type. Michigan insurers sell limited collision (pays only if you are not substantially at fault), standard collision (always has a deductible) and broad form collision (deductible waived when you are not substantially at fault). Limited collision is the budget choice for an older car; you can also drop collision entirely on a car worth little.
- Keep mini-tort coverage — it is cheap.Being 50% or more at fault can cost you up to $3,000 out of pocket for the other car's repairs. Limited property damage liability covers that for a small add-on premium.
- Use Michigan's rating rules to your advantage. Insurers cannot use sex, marital status, home ownership, credit score, education, occupation or ZIP code. They can use credit-based insurance scores, so paying bills on time still helps; NerdWallet found poor-credit drivers paying $177 a month with the cheapest carrier versus $110 with good credit.
- Re-quote at renewal. Insurers had to make new PIP rate filings for the year beginning July 1, 2026, so prices have shifted this year.
- If you are refused coverage,Michigan's Essential Insurance Act gives you a complaint process: the insurer must hold a managerial conference within 30 days of your request, and you can then ask DIFS for a review.
